There is this term “Opera Seria” casually thrown around about all opera with a serious theme. If you follow the link you’ll see that it is actually a very specific period in time the “real” opera seria was performed.
Today opera is frequently mocked as boring and pretentious. Many times I agree. The music is heavenly, but all to many of the stories are so out of date. Therefore I want to present you with this amusing piece of Carmen.
I think it’s time to brake some rules. It can be done in many ways. Playing with gender, age norms and musical hiccups is just one way. Not right. Not wrong. Not good. Not bad. Just a way. Playing around with art does not make the original disappear. Putting a mustache on Mona Lisa is not blasphemy and the original painting is till in The Louvre.
Isn’t it interesting that the fear of doing something “different” with opera can be so threatening to some people?
I have my own ways of breaking those rules within classical singing. I created a production of my own that I called “Trousers Envy”. Most people totally loved it. Well, actually everyone I’ve talked to did. I sang everything from baritone to soprano while telling the story of women dressed in male clothes from 3500 years ago up until present day. It was great fun!
Opera and art song can be presented in such a stale and rigid way. At lest that is my experience and point of view. What do you say about this tradition filled art form. What is the fear that keeps it stuffy and do you brake rules or do you conform? Do tell below! 🙂
