For almost 30 years, I’ve said the opposite. Self-destructive behavior doesn’t exist! It may sound strange to those who have been fed with that very message at all times. But wait and hear me out. I do have a method in the madness.

It’s a healthy reaction to an unhealthy state.
Through the years, I have worked with many clients who have been deep into heavy self-injurious behaviors. That’s how I got evidence for my thesis. It’s a way to survive.
Many times, it’s the only way to make it through. It doesn’t mean it’s any fun or feels good. But it creates a form of paradoxical security — a protest against something that does not work.
It is what I call: A healthy reaction to an unhealthy state. Or unhealthy situation if you wish. It’s self care! Which is why i picked a cat for this post. Is there any better symbol of taking care of ones self than the grooming feline?
In the moment when you are creating your behavior as a reaction to what is happening in your life, then it is quite logical. But after a while it goes foul. It doesn’t work any more. Instead, it turns into a kind of reverse effect and you start to feel bad about it. The whole thing seems so crazy. Why are you not sleeping? What is wrong with you? Get yourself together!
Doesn’t that seem familiar? The anger directed against yourself?
Another angle
With this post and video, I want to help you look at it from another angle. Help you see what appears so destructive with friendlier eyes. Awaken an understanding that you’re making the best of it and always have.
The only problem is that it is an old part of you still running. This part works like an echo in your energy field and still emits the same signals.
